The Spin welcomes back Oxford’s deep-groove-meisters, Time Is Of The Essence for their annual outing to the club!

The band is fronted by the brilliant saxophonist Ollie Weston. Ollie has been professionally in the company of such A-listers as Amy WinehouseBonobos, Jamie CullumThe London Jazz OrchestraThe Nelson Riddle Orchestra etc.. and he is currently touring extensively with the ‘Joni Mitchell band’, Hejira.

Also fundamental to Hejira’s sound – and to Time Is Of The Essence’s – is drummer Rick Finlay! Rick’s expansive career has seen him touring and/or recording with Sinead O’ConnorDes O’Connor, (and any number of other O’Connors!), Barbara Dickson, and all of the British jazz names one could muster up!

On the organ, playing multiple roles of bass player, chordal accompanist and soloist is the ever-inventive Martin Pickett! Martin is a well-loved musician having accompanied so many of the UK’s jazz glitterati, including sax gurus, Bobby Wellins, Art Themen, Julian Siegel and Alan Barnes.

Completing the quartet is The Spin’s own Pete Oxley on guitars. You know about Pete, right??? – creator and bandleader of Hejira, composer of some note (or even, of some notes!): Pete is one of only a handful of British composers to be published in the world-famous Sher Real Books! He has produced 17 albums of critically acclaimed original works and has performed with such A-Listers as Paul McCandlessNigel Kennedy and Randy Brecker.

But about the band itself:

They produce wide-ranging  original pieces (“finely honed, instantly appealing and right up there with any contemporary jazz writing…” ~ The Guardian) and feisty fare by the likes of Steely Dan, John Scofield and Michael Brecker. The Observer wrote of them that their gigs “…succeed in both edifying and entertaining their audiences”.

…And that is what is promised for a flamboyant night of deeply groovy jazz! Folks, these Summertown Wine Bar gigs always sell out, so please book NOW!!!

A note about the venue:

- We have brought the ‘doors’ time forward by half an hour as food is popular at the SWB. This allows for orders to be better staggered over the course of the evening.

- We seat people as much as possible on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. This means that those who buy tickets first are allocated the better seats (as opposed to that allocation being for those that show up first on the night)…so, BOOK NOW (and also save £5 off the ticket prices with our early bird deal)!!

- We are ready to support people who have additional accessibility needs, please let us know in advance via the contact form in order for our team of volunteers to design the assigned seating plan to accommodate you.

- There is no dedicated parking for the venue, but there are local car parks and on-street parking available in Summertown.

Over the last 20+ years, The Spin has presented live music of the highest calibre within the broad 'contemporary jazz' genre, creating scintillating nights out for anybody with a taste for interesting, exciting, alluring and luscious music.

At The Spin, we believe that our events should be accessible to all, as well as affordable. This, in part, is only made possible with the help of our team of generous volunteers, who volunteer not only their time but also their expertise towards making our gigs the success that they are.

Every musician who plays at The Spin gets properly paid - and it is through your ticket purchases alone that we can do that. Our events are run on a tight budget to keep ticket prices down; we realise that not everyone can afford or may be willing to pay for higher ticket prices. However, for those of you who are happy to pay a little more and contribute further to the efforts of The Spin, we are giving you the opportunity to ’support the club' by making a voluntary contribution on top of your ticket price. These donations will be greatly appreciated and will help us to continue putting on our fantastic live jazz events.
