Past Live Jazz Events
Following Jazz Samba’s recent appearance at Ronnie Scott’s, the club, in their review of the gig stated: “their love of jazz and samba oozed from every note played, and the final encore & applause reflected the joy given out by them to a very grateful audience”
The Spin opens it’s 2025 programme with a band led by two of the most exciting guitarists to emerge from the UK in recent years. Out of a mutual respect for each other’s playing, Chris Montague and Ant Law have formed a quartet with brand new material written together. The band will feature the incredible Conor Chaplin on bass and Jamie Murray on drums.
Two years ago, our Christmas gig was a one-off by an un-named band, put together to play the music of Joni Mitchell. To the band’s surprise, this got rapid traction and by 2024, they were playing 50 gigs in the year all over the UK and Ireland, selling out at London’s Jazz Café and playing prestigious festivals in jazz, folk and world-music genres. By their second gig they had adopted the name, Hejira.
The Pete Roth Quartet features leader Pete on guitar, Mike Pratt on bass, Simon Bates on saxophone and the incomparable Bill Bruford as a special guest on drums.
Back by popular demand, the first ever Spin guest (and all-time favourite!) John Etheridge returns to perform what’s become an annual treat of intimate interplay with the Spin’s very own Pete Oxley!
The Spin welcomes back Oxford’s deep-groove-meisters, Time Is Of The Essence for their annual outing to the club!
Soft Machine, from their earliest performances as a psychedelic band – who were contemporaries of, and shared stages with the Jimi Hendrix Experience – all the way to being one of Europe's best known ‘fusion’ groups, has influenced several generations of bands, and continues to be name-checked by today's hippest experimentalists.
This gig features The Spin’s own Pete Oxley, alongside his long-term guitar brother, Nicolas Meier, in a band purveying the broadest range of guitar stylings in a set of “utterly captivating original music” (The Guardian).
It’s a genuine thrill to welcome back to The Spin the international jazz artist Gilad Atzmon in a rare return to the UK. This band features the UK’s No.1 Hammond Organ player, Ross Stanley and the incredibly talented Joel Barford on drums.
The Spin is delighted to welcome back one of the most fiery, original and groovesome trumpeters that the UK has ever produced: Henry Spencer. He brings a stunning band, featuring his long-standing collaborator, the brilliant guitarist Ant Law!
The Spin welcomes back the much-loved, brilliant saxophonist, Art Themen!
Themen is still absolutely at the top of his game (he has just returned from a U.S. tour as the featured saxophonist with Soft Machine!), having had a full-on career, much of it spent with Britain’s national treasure pianist, Stan Tracey. With Tracey, Themen toured all over the world and recorded on arguably the U.K.’s most cherished jazz album, ‘Under Milk Wood’.
The Spin welcomes back – for the first time in a decade – the brilliant Argentinian guitarist, Luis D’Agostino!
Luis was resident in Oxford for some years in the early 2000s and was a hugely popular figure on the jazz scene, performing with such luminaries as Toni Kofi, Bobby Wellins, Jamie Cullum and Gilad Atzmon.
