John Law's Re-Creations
Thursday 30th May 2024
Let’s begin with this quote from The Guardian:
“Only in Re-Creations could Debussy be followed by Deep Purple. One of the best performances I have ever seen!”
Re-Creations is led by one of the most brilliantly creative musicians on this (or any other) planet: John Law! As a pianist, he is a formidable exponent of pretty much any style you’d care to consider, having been a prize-winning classical pianist as a child, to being one of the leading exponents of contemporary jazz today.
Relevant to this gig, know that John has worked extensively with such masters as Tim Garland, Jason Rebello, Andy Sheppard, Gwilym Simcock, and Evan Parker – to pick out just a few.
John is also a highly respected composer, again, across many genres; brilliantly interpreting John’s work will be his band, comprising:
Sam Crockatt: tenor & soprano saxophones (Parliamentary Jazz awards winner: best instrumentalist)
Henrik Jenson: double bass
Alex Goodyear: drums
(John Law: keyboards)
Here is how John described the project:
“The idea is simple: we take some of the best-known tunes from all genres – jazz, pop, indie, rock, folk, classical sometimes – and re-create them, finding new arrangements and new angles to present them, sometimes just spontaneously re-inventing them. But no matter how free and inventive we get, no matter how complex and intricate the arrangements become, audiences everywhere always feel part of the creative process, because they know the tune and recognise it whenever it returns”
